San Marino
San Marino is a tiny landlocked republic totally surrounded by the Italian
countryside. It lies centered on Monte Titano just a short 22 kilometers (15 miles) southwest of
Rimini on the Adriatic coast. At just over 62 square kilometers (23 square miles), San Marino
is the third smallest independent state in Europe. Only the Vatican and Monaco are smaller.
San Marino is also one of the oldest states in Europe, founded in 301 A. D. by a Christian
stonemason named Marinus.
